What is “Honor Our Soldiers”?
“Honor Our Soldiers” is a national Facebook campaign which was created to honor American veterans, past and present. In its current form, American Veterans Archaeological Recovery seeks to preserve and share the personal histories of those who have served our country, as a digital Archaeology initiative.
A History of Honor Our Soldiers
“Honor Our Soldiers” was created by the Civil War Trust, now the American Battlefield Trust, in 2013. The campaign was created to recognize the sacrifices made by American veterans and highlight the destruction and loss of historic battlefields to development in the United States. The American Battlefield Trust has protected more than 52,000 acres associated with the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War.
The American Battlefield Trust has also been extremely supportive of AVAR’s overall mission, and battlefield archaeology projects, and has entrusted the revitalization of the Honor Our Soldiers campaign to our team. We believe that there is no one better-suited to preserve and tell the story of our battlefields than American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines.
The Future of Honor Our Soldiers
AVAR has partnered with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on several recovery projects to identify MIA American soldiers abroad. In relation, we are working to create a research element of our program that will allow for greater participation of veterans with physical disabilities, or other constraints, that do not allow for extended attendance and participation on archaeology projects. It is our hope that this new aspect of our program will allow us to continue to generate meaningful and insightful contributions to Honor Our Soldiers.
